Vinegar vs bleach vs cleaner tablets: what each actually does
Every guide to washer smell ends in a product argument: vinegar people, bleach people, tablet people. The argument exists because each camp is right about a different problem. Here’s what each option actually does chemically, what it doesn’t do, and how to choose — including the one genuinely contested question.
What each one does
White vinegar (acetic acid) dissolves limescale and soap scum — mineral deposits, the crusty kind of buildup. It’s mildly antimicrobial, but it has no surfactant action, so it cleans the surfaces it touches and largely flows past the slimy biofilm hiding in drum perforations and hoses. Typical use: about 2 cups (500 ml) in the detergent drawer or drum, hottest empty cycle.
Liquid chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) kills mould, mildew, and bacteria on the surfaces it reaches. What it doesn’t do is remove anything: scale stays, and dead biofilm mass stays stuck where it was, ready to host the next generation. Typical use: about 1 cup (250 ml) in the bleach dispenser or drum, hottest empty cycle. Avoid thick “no-splash” formulations for machine cleaning — at least one manufacturer warns against them for its clean-washer cycle.
Machine-cleaner tablets (the oxygen-bleach type sold specifically for washers) are sodium percarbonate plus surfactants: the fizzing oxygen action lifts biofilm off surfaces while the surfactant helps the solution penetrate the drum’s perforations and the spaces behind it — the places vinegar and bleach mostly miss. This is the only category purpose-built for the biofilm problem. They cost more per clean than either pantry option; claims about one clean “lasting weeks longer” than DIY methods come from the people selling them, so take the mechanism seriously and the marketing numbers lightly.
The supporting cast: baking soda is a mild deodoriser and scrubbing aid, not a machine cleaner (and mixed with vinegar the two mostly neutralise each other — fizzy, satisfying, pointless). Citric acid (½–1 cup in an empty hot cycle) descales like vinegar and is gentler on rubber, making it the uncontroversial choice below. Soda crystals (about 500 g, hot cycle — a UK staple) cut grease and detergent residue well but don’t descale.
Safety, briefly
Never mix bleach and vinegar, or run one straight after the other without a plain rinse cycle between: the combination releases chlorine gas, which you’ll smell before you see. Ventilate the room and wear gloves when handling either.
The contested question: does vinegar damage seals?
Some manufacturers say frequent vinegar use degrades rubber seals and hoses over time. Weighing against that: the same manufacturers sell their own cleaner tablets, no independent testing of the claim appears to be public, vinegar is generally documented as safe for common seal rubbers, and at least one other manufacturer recommends vinegar cleaning outright. Genuinely unresolved, in other words. A reasonable position: occasional vinegar (monthly-ish) is very unlikely to matter; if you descale often because of hard water and want zero doubt, use citric acid instead — it does the same job without the warning attached.
So what should you actually run?
Match the cleaner to the symptom:
- Musty smell, visible black gunk: the problem is biofilm. First clean the gasket and drain filter by hand — no cycle replaces that — then run a tablet or a bleach cycle to treat what you can’t reach.
- Crusty white deposits, hard-water area, slow drawer: the problem is scale. Vinegar or citric acid, hot cycle.
- Both, which is common in an older neglected machine: descale first (acid), rinse cycle, then a tablet or bleach cycle a day later. Never as one combined brew.
For maintenance after that, roughly monthly — or every 30 loads — run whichever matches your water: tablets or bleach in soft-water areas, alternating with an acid descale in hard-water ones. And remember the cheapest option outperforms all three at prevention: a door left ajar.
